Upcycled "going away" dress into pillows. With the following letter:
This pillow was created using pieces of Grandma Ellen “going
away” dress. The “going away” outfit is
an old tradition when the couple would change from their formal bridal attire
to another outfit that they wear as they departed from the reception to embark
on their honeymoon. It was also symbolic
as it represented the moment when a couple would start their new life
together.
The quilt block that I used is called a log cabin block.
Traditionally the center of a log cabin is red which symbolized the hearth of a
home. I chose to use a photo of Grandma Ellen
and Grandpa Bob because they are the center of love in our family. Around the photo is the pink dress fabric and
then “logs” of various fabrics representing the unique and special ways God has
gifted their children and grandchildren.
In quilt terminology, the smaller pink dress fabric squares are called
cornerstones. In a building the corner stones are essential and indispensable,
the foundation on which something is constructed or developed. So it is with our family, the cornerstone was
love from Grandma and Grandpa. When you
hold this pillow, it represents love and a hug from Grandma and Grandpa.
